Wayside Restaurant, Bakery & Creamery — You know a restaurant is serious about breakfast when it offers free, freshly fried doughnut holes during early-bird happy hour from 7 to 8 a.m. At the century-old Wayside Restaurant, Bakery & Creamery, those sweet buttermilk nuggets are just one of the top-notch baked goods made in-house daily.

Late risers may miss the free treats, but the good news is that the Wayside serves up hearty breakfasts from morning to night, every day of the week. Regulars and tourists settle into booths or perch on stools at the recently refurbished, U-shaped counter and tuck into affordably priced, heaping plates — think corned-beef hash with hand-cut home fries, fat western omelettes and weekend Benedicts with housemade hollandaise. On Mondays, the old-school daily breakfast special is chipped-beef gravy over toast or a fluffy biscuit, both baked fresh.

Bonus for those who breakfast into the evening: For the Wayside’s second daily happy hour, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., desserts are half price. There’s never been a better excuse to indulge in the Yankee tradition of pie for breakfast.
