Vermont Attorney General T.J. Donovan joined 15 other attorneys general on Monday in supporting two states challenging President Donald Trump’s controversial executive order on immigration and refugee resettlement.

Washington and Minnesota successfully sued on Friday to temporarily lift Trump’s travel ban, which had halted all refugee arrivals and immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries.

Trump’s team appealed the order to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Arguments in the matter have been scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday.

“I am proud to support Washington and Minnesota in their legal action against this unconstitutional order,” said Donovan in a written statement. He could not immediately be reached for further comment.

The 16 attorneys general who signed the amicus curiae — “friend of the court” — brief argue that the ban is unconstitutional and that reinstating it would harm state colleges, universities and medical institutions, and lower state tax revenues from students, tourists and business visitors.

“If this court were to grant a stay, it would resurrect the chaos experienced in our airports beginning on the weekend of January 28 and 29, and cause harm to the states — including to state institutions such as public universities, to the businesses that sustain our economies, and to our residents,” the filing reads.

The other signatories are California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The case could ultimately end up before the U.S. Supreme Court.

  1. Another mouse that is trying to roar. Having lived in nine states, taught at five universities and served for twenty-eight years in the military, I never cease to be amused by the extent to which some Vermonters think of themselves as trend setters and political leaders. Every now and then we should all take a serious look in the mirror and ask ourselves why we are so out of synch with the rest of America.

  2. yeah like we don’t have enough of taking care of our own, now we have to put the refugees first..guess these fools don’t care about their American citizens who voted them in who thought they would watch out for us…guess not..just bring them in and to hell with us..

  3. Thanks to TJ Donovan for standing up for all people. All refugees coming to the United States have gone through 2 to 3 years of “extreme” vetting. Many worked with the US military in their homelands can not stay there. They are literally escaping with their lives because they helped us. They have earned our assistance and we are obligated to provide it.

  4. Refugees are not illegal immigrants. They are escaping horrific wars and terrorists. They can be great assets to our country as many are skilled professionals, physicians, educators, scientists, technical experts and more. They have fled their homes because they fear for their lives and the lives of their children. They need a safe haven to reestablish themselves not a handout but acceptance.
