It’s only September, and already the sign-whining has begun.

In an email sent to supporters Friday, the Vermont Republican Party used a vandalized Randy Brock lawn sign to solicit donations to the party. Peculiarly, party chairman Jack Lindley seemed to draw a connection in the email between the vandalism and Brock’s political opponent, Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin.

“In so many ways what you see is symbolic of what is wrong in Vermont. And wrong about Governor Shumlin,” he wrote. “The arrogance of power. His ‘my way or the highway’ mentality; his arrogant refusal to listen to the ideas of others; his refusal to debate Randy Brock.”

In an interview with Seven Days, Lindley took his almost-accusation a tiny bit further.

  1. I don’t know if this is something being put on by the Republic party (to raise money) or what it is. Obviously the command and control is the guy running for governor. It’s pretty hard to tell, but I wouldn’t rule out anything as a motive.

  2. The Republicans might be on to something here. We may have a serial-sign-smasher on the loose in Vermont, and he works for Governor Shumlin! Is this racially motivated? WE DON’T KNOW! But probably!

There’s a racist, anti-military democrat on the loose and this person is smashing Randy Brock’s sign! Send the Republicans all your money!

  3. Newsflash to Snuggles: the Dems do the exact same thing. Are you on the Vt. Dems email list? Everything a non-Democrat says or does is deliberately twisted and spun into something it isn’t, and is used as an hysterical and desperate excuse to beg for money.
This, boiled down to its essence, is what BOTH political parties say in every single email or fundraising letter:
“CAN YOU BELIEVE WHAT THOSE EVIL, TERRIBLE, SUB-HUMAN [name of opposing party] ARE SAYING/DOING??!! THEY’RE UNAMERICAN AND THEY KILL AND EAT CHILDREN!! QUICK, SEND US MONEY SO WE CAN STOP THEM!!”
People should: a) stop believing in their ideology; 2) stop believing that someone with an opposing ideology is evil; and, iii) stop sending money to politicians and political parties.

  4. It isn’t shummy, but it very clearly is a democrat and it’s not new. One may remember Sanders supporters (If I remember correctly the car was found outside Sanders campaign headquarters) stealing Tarrant’s Signs.

  5. I suspect that Thayt Brooks won $70,000 by betting he could take the biggest bite out of a Shumlin sign. But he got mixed up and bit into a Brock sign. His benefactor decided to pay off anyway since it was a real big bite.

  6. It being Vermont – my first thought was some wildlife – like a Bear, Moose or (more likely) a deer. With all the talk going on in this thread, though, I’m now sure it was a turkey.

  7. Vice-chairman of the United States Military Academy at West Point??
I know there is a Superintendent and a Commandant of Cadets, but when did they start having a Vice-chairman? Or a Chairman, come to that?
