Thousands of people attended the Women’s March in Montpelier Saturday afternoon in a jubilant celebration outside the Statehouse. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) made an appearance...
The massive crowds caused miles-long traffic backups along north and southbound Interstate 89, according to Vermont State Police. Authorities suggested drivers find alternate routes to avoid the gridlock and temporarily closed exit 8 and exit 9. “Commuters will NOT be able to access Montpelier via the interstate and are advised to find alternate routes of travel until further notice,” police said.
From Vermont State Police spokesman Scott Waterman: “Per the Montpelier City Police Chief, travel within the city is highly restricted and city roads cannot support any more people or vehicles.”
Both exits were reopened at 2:45 p.m., police said.
The event was scheduled to run from about 1 to 3 p.m. The throngs were among an estimated 2.5 million people marching around the world.

These are fantastic pix! Go Vermont!
Where were all these people on election day? I hope everyone gets this out of their system today so the counary can move forward. Be safe out there folks.
“Where were all these people on election day?” asks @citizen.
They were out there voting — part of the 70% of Vermonters who voted against Donald Trump.
And, no, it isn’t about getting it “out of their system today” – the only way the country moves forward is if millions of us from every part of the country stand up together to resist the divisive authoritarian destructive agenda of the Donald Trump. People need to keep demonstrating, keep organizing, keep talking to elected officials, keep volunteering for community organizations, keep donating, and doing everything else it takes to challenge the dangerous direction Trump wants to take the country.
That’s the only way we’ll “move forward” or “be safe.”
So inspired! That was the most people I have ever been with!
Today is day 1. It won’t be out of our system until all people have equal rights, equal access, equal freedom and equal safety.
So your plan is to resist and protest for the next 4 years at least? Don’t any of you activists have jobs that require you to show up. Once again you need to stop shouting and start listening. President Trump spoke yesterday about returning the power to the people. When he says that he is referring to you, me and every other American. How about giving the guy a chance. We are one America and it would be great if people started to understand that. It is great that millions of people across this country used the freedom to voice their concerns today that democracy provides, but now it’s time to give President Trump time to respond to your ideas. Please try to remember that a raising tide lifts all ships, and when you embrace patriotism there is no room for race or sexism. God bless America.
To all of you that are shouting that you don’t have equal freedom or rights or safety try having your march in Saudi Arabia or China or any other non-western country. Then you would realize how good we all have it here.

You mean stand up together against “them” or as Hillary classified “them” the basket of deplorables. How unifying.
I was there today in Montpelier. And yes I have a job. I am a nurse who has served the people of this country for more than 40 years. I know what it looks like like right here in Vt when people are denied healthcare. I have also volunteered in Haiti so I have seen both ends of the spectrum. Trump is bad news for healthcare.
The Vermont spirit of caring for each other is strong. Those who say “Stop protesting, and give Trump a chance” have been duped. Many others see the man for what he is: a manipulator, a liar, a fraud, and an instrument of a very destructive and dehumanizing force. Yesterday was great!
This was great!
All nationalities, religions sexual orientation ,native and immigrant ,Jewish,Muslim ,Catholic and so on.
All spoke and were listened to.
Some say it accomplishes nothing.
Those of us there know better .We can feel it and see it.The love that unites us.
It is not just important for our elected officials to listen to us,It is just as important even more so that we listen to and understand each other.Know each other .
That is the basis from which all positive change must come. That is the foundation and firm footing to build and move forward with.
Protesting for fundamental rights and principals and unity amoung groups that should not be deviided ,does not cause the division in America .
Judging from your couch what you did not experience ,based on reports on Social media produced by those whose only cause seems to be to attack anyone who doesn’t support Trump. as if that could invalidate over seven hundred thousand people nation wide that peacefully United , That is the division that already exists.
I truly believe no matter who you voted for we all want the same things.
Seeing each other correctly is the only way we will ever agree on how and what to change to achieve the world we all wish.
