Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said for the first time Friday morning that he would vote for rival Hillary Clinton in the November election. But he wasn’t quite ready to concede the Democratic presidential primary, nor would he offer a full-throated endorsement of the former secretary of state.

Since losing California to Clinton more than two weeks ago, Sanders has alternately sounded a combative and a conciliatory tone. In a speech Thursday night in New York City called “Where we go from here,” he largely avoided mentioning his Democratic rival and pledged to continue fighting for his progressive priorities.

But asked directly Friday morning on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” whether he would vote for Clinton this fall, Sanders provided an unambiguous response.

“Yes,” he said. “Yeah, I think the issue right here is, I’m going to do everything I can to defeat Donald Trump.”

“I think Trump in so many ways will be a disaster for the country if he were to be elected president,” he continued, calling the presumptive Republican nominee a bigot and arguing that he is “not somebody who should become president.”

Sanders said he was “pretty good at arithmetic” and acknowledged that Clinton had more pledged delegates and superdelegates than he did. Asked why he wouldn’t therefore drop out of the race, he said, “Why would I want to do that when I want to fight to make sure that we have the best platform that we possibly can? That we win the most delegates that we can, and that we transform — the goal of our campaign was to transform this nation.”

The senator was scheduled to deliver another speech late Friday morning in Albany and then to campaign for congressional candidate Eric Kingson in Syracuse.

  1. So Bernie will be collecting his pay to represent VT in the senate while instead he will be travelling all over the country on his ego trip. Is this not similar to the graft he is railing about?

  2. Still a DUMBASS and always will be..he’s gotten worse..how can he want a murderer in the WH and rule over the citizens..
@concernedVter, great question and we all know the answer to that..yes he’ll will collect his pay just like when he and his 50 family/friends went to Rome on the donors money, expensive vacation just like obumass
@Sean Moran, yeah I’m sure the Socialist draft dodger and wife will still have the secret service follow him around till the end..thats what socialists do — use other people money..

  3. Gee, is there anyone like me who feels more than just a little let down that Bernie is a traitor to his own campaign? How can we believe his claims now that he was in this election to win?

Every election, we’re told, is *crucial.* It is and it isn’t. Reagan was a horrible president, turning the US into the largest debtor nation in the world during his term. The Bushes were horrible presidents, respectively starting and pursuing a series of Mideast wars that continue today, and abrogating democracy and the rule of law in our own country. Trump would also be a horrible president, but the country has had just as bad or perhaps worse and survived.

I urge all the Bernie supporters to disregard Bernie’s cave-in to Clintonism and the Democratic Party, and do as I will, vote for Bernie on election day. Perhaps one day we’ll get a truly independent candidate, one willing to disrupt business as usual in the presidential elections in order to reform our electoral system and break its two-party duopoly.

I admit that my opponent won, but I won’t admit that I lost.

  5. Where the real travesty lies, is that Seven Days and almost all other media outlets has continued to pander to the two party catastrophe that is ruining this country and hasn’t said word one about Gary Johnson running with the Libertarian Party or Jill Stein with the Green Party. Nice of Paul and Seven Days to be so completely biased and limit our choices for us before we even get to the election booths. Who are you people working for anyway?

  6. there are kinda high stakes here.

never, in the recent past, when either major party had a contested convention did they win the general election in November. but also never did a major political party prop up someone as disgusting, bigoted, narcissistic, immature, mendacious, and profoundly unqualified for office as Capt. Combover.

so for Bernie to bring to Philly a contested convention runs the risk of electing Combover in November. but Combover is so ludicrous that perhaps Hillary will beat him anyway, even if Bernie continues to challenge her through the convention.

some conspiracy nuts are saying that maybe Hillary and Bill long ago made a deal with Trump to get him to run this year and be the most outlandish, immature, narcissistic, mendacious, and bigoted he can be to provide for Hillary an opponent soooo disgusting that Hillary gets elected despite her negatives. if it was Hillary vs. Kasich or Ryan or someone, it might look like an equitable race between two adults with experience in government.

this way it’s someone having the experience of FLOTUS, 8-year U.S. senator, and 4-year Sec. State vs. a 70-year old big baby who surrounds himself with “yes men”, doesn’t know anything about government and has zero experience, and is so full of himself that he cannot fathom how disgusting and bogus he projects himself out to be for the nation and the world to behold. everyone knows that Capt. Combover is a clown, even people voting for the clown.

so it might be that Bernie, playing a little risk here, can push the DNC into more reform by holding out. but the risk is Captain Combover getting promoted to Clown-in-Chief in January and given the nuclear codes.

but hey, what can go wrong with that?
