David Sweat, left, and Richard Matt.
Multiple media outlets have reported that Dannemora escapee David Sweat was shot and taken into custody Sunday afternoon.

A state trooper shot Sweat, 35, around 3 p.m., the New York Times reported. The incident occurred in Constable, N.Y., 40 miles northwest of Dannemora, WCAX and other outlets said. Sweat’s condition was not immediately clear.

The news comes two days after authorities shot and killed Sweat’s fellow escapee, Richard Matt, in Malone, N.Y. Authorities on Sunday released the autopsy findings on Matt, which revealed he was shot three times in the head. His body also showed bug bites and blisters.

The Buffalo News reported that Matt was likely drunk and suffering from an illness at the time of his death.

The convicted killers were discovered missing from the Clinton Correctional Facility on June 6, triggering a manhunt that captured international attention and attracted swarms of reporters to the sleepy region

  1. Kind of odd that the officer yesterday isn’t being grilled for shooting an unarmed man twice in the back. I know this isn’t your usual ‘suspect’, but use your radio, and get help if you’re too fat and out of shape to keep up with a malnourished escapee who has been in hiding for the last three weeks. Lethal force was not justified here, as far as I’m concerned.

  2. Save your outrage for some suspect who has never harmed anyone. This guy, on the other hand, was an escaped convicted killer in the middle of another crime, as a fugitive, who was considered extremely dangerous and who might kill again. You actually make those who stand up for unarmed suspects look bad by advocating for things that are unreasonable.

  3. Too bad this officer’s aim wasn’t as good as the one on Matt. Sweat was ruthless is his murder of an innocent, shot him like 20 times.

On top of that, the search cost law abiding tax payers millions of dollars, but wait, another $50k or so per year for the rest of his pathetic life.

The only thing Sweat is good for now is to describe how he and his pal caused all of this ruckus. Hope the have to beat it out of him!
