It looks like it might rain all week. For the ski towns and those in the Mad River Valley, it’s part and parcel to mud season. Luckily, a smattering of eateries along the Route 100 corridor are offering up hearty fare for the drizzly start to Restaurant Week.
At Hourglass at Stowe Mountain Lodge — just up Stowe’s Mountain Road — the chef is shaking off the mud season blues with an exquisite $35 dinner menu. If it’s a chilly night, start with heirloom-tomato soup with local cheddar croutons, then segue into a truffled beef pot roast. And if the sun comes out, you might get in the mood pan-seared Shetland salmon with ricotta gnocchi, sweet peas, cider-cured bacon and pea tendrils. Either way, you can finish with a hot cocoa pot de crème with almond shortbread and housemade marshmallow — perfect for any weather.
Rain is the perfect excuse to dine out and catch a film, and at Waitsfield’s Big Picture Theater & Café, you can do both. Not only is this dawn-to-dusk eatery offering a three-course $10 lunch special throughout Restaurant Week — with soup, sandwich and cookie— but their $25 dinner menu takes diners around the world. Say you’re in the mood for tandoori chicken with fig chutney, couscous, almonds, and fresh yogurt, but your companion wants fish tacos with red rice, black beans, and cilantro-lime sour cream. No problem! Their menu suits all kind of palates.
