Dear Reverend,
Last year pretty much sucked all around, and I want to make a New Year’s resolution to do more to spread light and love. What are some practical suggestions that anyone can do to effect positive change in our political climate in the coming year?

Dear Rae Deyonce,
If you really want to make a positive change in the political climate, you could run for office. But that’s not a very practical option for most people.
To be able to spread light and love, you need to be sure you have enough to share. Make your own physical and mental health a priority in order to keep your good-vibes tank full.
To that end: Make sure you’re getting enough quality sleep, and even though it’s cold, bundle up and get outside every day for fresh air. Exercise is key, but remember that dancing around your living room counts. Avoid the seasonal lure of simply cozying up on the couch when it gets dark at four o’clock.
As for taking action, start small by being extra nice to the people around you. Spend more time with your friends and family. Check in on your neighbors. Make it a point to pay someone a compliment every day. Give your coworker a ride to the mechanic. You get the picture.
Once you get your good-juju juices flowing, kick it up a notch and find ways to get involved in your community. Donating money is always great, but giving your time is priceless. There are plenty of places, from food shelves to animal shelters, that could use a hand. Also, remember to vote on Town Meeting Day and in other local elections — and encourage those around you to do the same.
Here’s hoping that putting in a little extra effort will make 2026 feel a whole lot brighter.
Good luck and God bless,
The Reverend
