Congressman Peter Welch (D-Vt.) voted Wednesday against a fellow Democrat’s attempt to pursue the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

Fifty-eight Democrats voted to debate Rep. Al Green’s (D-Texas) motion to file articles of impeachment, but Welch was one of 126 Democrats who joined Republicans in killing the motion.

Green’s impeachment resolution accused Trump of inciting hatred and associating the presidency with white nationalism, among other alleged offenses.

During an interview after the vote, Welch described Trump’s behavior as “appalling” but maintained that trying to impeach him would “undercut” special counsel Robert Mueller’s ongoing investigation into possible ties between the Trump presidential campaign and Russian operatives.

“My view is that he has to be held accountable and the question is how best to do that,” Welch said of Trump. “The best way, I believe, to hold him accountable is to support a continuing and aggressive investigation by Mr. Mueller.”

Welch refused to say whether he believes Trump has committed impeachable offenses. He instead emphasized the political headwinds that an impeachment attempt would encounter in a Republican-controlled Congress.

Why not at least debate it on the House floor?

“In my judgment, there’s a price you would pay if the forum were seen as totally political,” Welch said.

  1. Time to find a new representative. Welch has always struck me as a clown/chump. Lets get a real “representative” in office and take back America from the special interest/political careerists that plague our government. He’s a shill! Send him home where he belongs.

  2. There will be lots of time and opportunities to impeach Trump . Only the idiot fringe would persue this nonsense now . Welch is correctly waiting for the special prosecutor to indict son-in-law’s , son’s and many others These same dreamers ignore the real possibilty that Pence would be more dangerous then the big orange child .

  3. vote him out right now. I mean Welch. Impeach him. you can see he’s already succumbed to the don’t-rock-the boat, old boy mentality. get him out!

  4. I agree with Rich ard. However painful it is to set impeachment aside in the short term, it’s what we need to do temporarily to let the Mueller investigation play out. Let’s have more thoughtfulness and less perfunctory outrage in our responses.

  5. Well, what a surprise. Welch is no better than any other shill in Washington. Hes just waiting for Bernie to die or retire so that he can move up to the Senate. I think Vermont needs to send a woman to the Senate. Sue Minter would be an excellent choice.

  6. A course everyone wants to impeach our President because he’s not a liberal democrat or a socialist. Now, why didn’t you want to impeach Billy Boy the liar Clinton or the fraud obama. If anyone who is racist and full of hate it’s obama. Those 2 should have been impeached, but noooo democrats won’t impeach their own. Mueller is not going to find anything, he’s just dragging this bull out to rack up a big payout. All the democrats will have egg on their faces when the shit hit’s the fan. Hillary with all her crooked deals with the Russians. obama with his selling guns to the enemy, his dirty deals with Iran/Cuba. that is one president who should have been impeached from day one. President Trump has been doing a great job in his first term …

  7. Welch is no better than the repubs, i guess we need a new representative in there that isn’t afraid to stand up for Trump’s lies and deceit.

  8. I’m surprised at how the likes and dislikes are lining up here. Could there be bots involved?

  9. In my judgment, theres a price you would pay if the forum were seen as totally political, Welch said. Really? It’s political to recognize how he is tearing apart the fabric of our country?

  10. Sorry you ran out of space with your diatribe Donna . Let me finish it for you .
“President Trump has been doing a great job in his first term …of 10 to 15 years in jail !”
    You’re welcome .

  11. @ Rich ard.. nope not Pres Trump in Jail, more like the democrats in prison!!!! Like Clinton who had sex in the Governor’s mansion in Arkansas, plus raping women there then having sex in the Oval Office in the White House but you all just close your eyes to your beloved pervert Clinton, No one said a damn thing when obumass tore this country apart with racist lies or by letting in all these illegals who have killed many. Oh, let’s not forget the lying crooked Killary, who had people giving her the questions at debates. nor the lying Sanders who wants to give everything away.. there is nothing for FREE… nothing, unless you don’t work you will be paying for all this free stuff.. I’m proud to be an American and voted for Pres Trump.

  12. Ms. Boutin is depressingly bitter. I hope she’s not this vicious in person. What a peach. Is she a 60-minute Christian?

  13. @ A Trout. Just because I/we don’t agree with you and your liberal democrats we are “depressingly bitter. I hope she’s not this vicious in person”.. You all just hate it when you all don’t like hearing the truth. I know it must be a shock to you democrats but Sanders and Clinton LOST..you all need to just get over it. As for being a 60 minute Christian, I have more Christian in me then you will ever have. You attack religion a lot??? Now tell me how I am vicious, I’m not dangerously aggressive because I say whats on my mind. I’m not a sheep who just follow those who lie. but most important I’m not a SNOWFLAKE who gets their feelings hurt because someone said BOO to them… as the South says “BLESS YOU !!!”
