The sanctions range “from probation to official college discipline, which places a permanent record in the student’s file,” the school said in a statement.
Murray attempted to lecture in the McCullough Student Center about his 2012 book, Coming Apart. Murray is better known for his 1994 book, The Bell Curve, which sought to correlate social inequality to genetics. The Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled his work “racist pseudoscience.”
Students in the crowd jeered and shouted down Murray as he tried to speak. After 20 minutes, he and Professor Allison Stanger, who had signed on to moderate the talk, moved to a private room and live-streamed their discussion.
When they later tried to leave the building, a group of students and others from outside the campus community were waiting. The violent “mob,” as Middlebury vice president for communications Bill Burger called it, then yelled, screamed and attacked Stanger and Murray.
Burger eventually whisked Stanger and Murray away in a car after the group surrounded the vehicle and threw a stop sign in front of it. Stanger later recounted in a Facebook post that she “feared for my life.”
Middlebury Police on Tuesday said that no one will be charged with a crime stemming from the incident “due to insufficient evidence against any specific individual.”
A total of eight masked people — among more than 20 people in the crowd — used “tactics that indicated training in obstruction and intimidation,” police said.

Part of their punishment should be they have to sit and listen to ideas that they don’t agree with without speaking till the speaker is finished. If after the speaker is finished they would be allowed to debate the speaker if they could come up with counter points to the speakers views. It might be a real lesson in the 1st amendment.
I believe the Middlebury administration needs to take some responsibility for this mess. They welcomed speaker Charles Murray to their campus despite student’s protest and outrage. In this day and age we must always take clear and direct steps to eradicate racism. Always. KV
Wow KV, that’s quite a statement. Let’s limit free speech…what could possibly go wrong? Unbelievable.
You are so far from American values it’s terrifying. “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.”
Ideas win or lose with debate. Not censorship.
Ashamed Middlebury is in Vermont. What a small-minded immature student body. Go home to Momma, babies.
Only 67 students are you kidding there was more then 67 causing a violent riot…but no arrest..what about that man from Burlington(?) who admitted he went down there to cause a fuss..he was what 38 yrs old not even a student he had no right to be there he should had been charged for starting a riot.. So what are these snowflakes going to get..slap on the hand, given time out, give up their safe space place, given a hug and be told “we are so sorry your feeling were hurt”?? Is this what Middlebury College is teaching..violence, stopping speakers from speaking, cause a riot, endanger people lives no worry nothing will be done to you.. Parents should had been called and told to come pick up your entitled brats as they are kicked out of this college!!!!
KV are you for real?? In this day and age we must always take clear and direct steps to eradicate racism. .. So you justified the violence? It’s the College fault?? You do know they really hurt a Professor and used a dangerous weapon!! But guess you think that’s ok..

That’s what should have been investigated; and the funder behind the Charles Murray lecture; and the well-funded National organization supporting these types of non-academic racist speakers with the specific intention of creating disturbances at academic institutions.
“Non-academic racist speakers”
First, Mr. Murray has a Ph.D. What’s your degree?
Second, I’ll wager you haven’t read any of his books.
Third, if you think Murray was intentionally trying to provoke protest, the best thing to have done is to foil his grand plan by not attending his lecture or attending and sitting quietly. If there’s a grand scheme, these idiot protesters took the bait hook, line, and sinker.
…FACULTY GUIDED student protest and outrage.
Clearly astroturf, not authentic.
Tactically identical to TaIiban and lSlS hiding behind innocents; in their minds, Useful ldiots.
I’ve seen it on campuses for decades, but now it’s an open secret.
